The ADL Force 5 is a versatile and cost-effective testing machine designed for biomechanical applications, such as the evaluation of orthopedic implants, components, and materials.

The Force 5 features a wide range of motion and a highly flexible design. This allows the machine to be configured for simulation of many different types of joints, including hips, knees, spines, shoulders, TMJs, and ankles. The design also allows the machine to be used as a load frame for bending, tension and compression tests.

Extensive range of motion

The ADL Force 5 is capable of replicating the motions associated with activities of daily living (ADLs), such as running, deep knee bends, and even swinging a golf club. Up to twelve different physiological motions can be sequenced to define a particular lifestyle. Orthopedic implants can therefore be accurately evaluated under conditions that truly replicate those experienced in vivo.

Unparalleled test fidelity

AMTI's patented* Virtual Soft Tissue (VST) control eliminates the need for mechanical springs by using an advanced software model to incorporate the constraining influence of the soft tissue that surrounds the knee. VST allows for the inclusion of nonlinear and asymmetric force displacement characteristics, which occur in vivo but cannot be recreated with conventional mechanical methods.

Integral microseparation feature

During the swing phase of gait, the hip joint is unloaded and laxity in the constraining tissue of the hip can allow the femoral head and acetabular cup components of the hip implants to separate slightly. When heel strike occurs, the joint is suddenly loaded and the two implant components come back into contact with each other. This microseparation of the joint can influence the wear of prosthetic devices and has therefore been built into the optional abduction head. The amount of joint distraction can be easily adjusted and measured.

Matchless accuracy and ease of use

Tuning time for force control simulators has traditionally been a major burden, often taking days of adjustment by an expert to get a single set of prosthetic specimens ready for testing. AMTI's Adaptive Control Technology (ACT) is enabled with a single click and software automatically tunes the machine's performance within approximately 30 cycles to levels of accuracy not obtainable with manual tuning. In most scenarios, the RMS error is less than 5 percent in both force control and displacement control modes of operation.

Physiologically correct

The ADL Force 5 is designed to replicate the physiological environment of the joint in addition to its motions. The testing station is oriented in the physiologically correct position and paired with a peristaltic pump for the recirculation of a temperature-controlled fluid bath that immerses the specimen contact areas.

Proven long life and reliable performance

AMTI simulators have a reputation for quality and longevity in the orthopedic implant testing community. All simulator motions are servo-hydraulically generated with long-life, laminar seal actuators than are rated to provide more than 108 cycles.

Integrated multi-axis load cell

A six-axis load cell is incorporated into the Force 5, allowing for the continuous or periodic measurement of the forces and moments of the x, y, and z axes.

Advanced control modes

AMTI simulators can be operated under both force and displacement control.

Ready for ISO and ASTM testing

The simulator is capable of testing to all applicable ISO and ASTM standards for: hip, knee and spine implants, including ISO-14242-1, ASTM-WK451, ASTM-F1612-95, ISO/DIS-7206-4, ISO-14243-1, ISO-14243-3, ASTM-F1715-00, ASTM-F1800-04, ASTM-F1223-05, ASTM-F2423-05, ISO/DIS-12189, ISO/DIS-18192-1, and ASTM-F1717-04.
